Junior Librarians Wanted!

Tue, 05/17/2016 - 10:19am -- Miss Luci

This year's summer reading theme is: "On Your Mark, Get Set...Read!" We need some coaches to encourage kids by checking off their reading charts and giving them incentives prizes.
They will also need assistance in the Batting Cage (craft area). How old do you have to be? If you will be entering 5th grade in the fall, you are old enough. If you are 16 and have some spare time to help out, we welcome you! How much time will it take out of your summer? Very little...most kids average 2 or 3 shifts of 2 hours each over the course of the program.

The second place winner was FISH IN A TREE, by Lynda Mullay Hunt, with 635 votes. Both of these titles center on young people facing disabilities...their popularity speaks well for the compassionate nature of our youth. The third place finisher was THE TERRIBLE TWO, a rib-tickling school comedy by Jory John and Mac Barnett, coming in close behind at 633 votes.

Good news...Maddy's coming back! Everyone's favorite golden retriever can't wait to come back to the library, now that she's recovered from some surgery on her leg. Maddy loves to lie close-by and listen to kids read to her. This will be her third year of helping kids gain confidence with their reading skills, especially reading out loud in class. She will be visiting on the third Thursday of every month from 4:00-5:30pm. Each child gets 15-minutes' private time to spend reading to Maddy.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Fri, 10/16/2015 - 1:39pm -- Miss Luci

Something new for kids from birth to 5 years of age... Our library will be joining with dozens of libraries around the state to begin a new initiative. Experts agree that the most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that kids need to hear 1000 books before they learn to read independently...this will increase their vocabulary and their listening and narrative skills. 1000 books? How can it be done?
